He taught chemistry, art and ceramics at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Fort Lauderdale, and served as yearbook moderator and assistant financial officer. He also studied art at Florida Atlantic University. Due to the Cuban revolution, he was exiled to Miami in 1962, and began working with the Piarist U.S.A.

He taught at Piarist Schools in Barcelona, later teaching in Cuba. He made a profession of solemn vows in 1954, and was ordained to the priesthood on Septemin Barcelona. He studied philosophy and theology at a Spanish Piarist seminary, graduating in 1955. He entered the Piarist order in 1948 in Moya, Spain. He was born in Catalonia, Spain on Januto Manuel Pala and Antonia Ulles.
